For me, buying antiques and collectables is one way of revealing to me the past by looking at various phases of history through Art, Fashion, Design and trends, from oak furniture, to 20th century household items and interior design.touching many periods from Magna Carta right up to the modern day.
To wear the fashion styles of the Edwardians through the art deco period and beyond, adorning walls with paintings and prints as well as displaying ceramic ornaments from your favourite period and designers. Buying a piece Georgian silver to decorate your table or look at in your pride of place instead of melting down and destroying a piece of history as so many collectors do now.
Part of the fun is visualising famous people of the period, using an item you have bought and to know the history that was being written at the time, from the Magna Carta to the English Civil War, to days of the British Empire, the Napoleonic wars, the industrial revolution, both World Wars, to the Swinging 60’s.
Ones own personal history becomes more significant and the desire to reminisce with age. See the TV ads of your time: click here to see your own era http://www.classictvads.co.uk/homepage.html Click here for the old TV shows of your particular era http://www.crazyabouttv.com/decades/1950s.html
Being of vintage years myself I often I think back on my childhood remembering my favourite holiday which was down in the west country at Looe in Cornwall,The long journey took most of the day to reach Great Trees holiday Park in my fathers Austin A40 Somerset.
I like to watch TV programs that are set in the 40's 50's and 60's such as The Royal, Heartbeat,Call the Midwife to name just a few, I enjoy looking the classic cars the clothes the styling and way of life that was so familiar to me years ago. Although I was born 9 years after the war I have such a fondness and liking for the WW2 Prop aircraft like Spitfires and Hurricanes and hearing their familiar engine sound.
Bakelite Telephones of the 30’s to 50’s and the iconic coloured Telephones of the 60’s and 70’s hearing the ring ring is lovely.I know its my age (poor old chap) but I know I’m not alone in walking down memory lane to the village of nostalgia as often as possible with the help of photos, music and items from the past and of our childhood.
Some people stylise their homes to indulge their passion for their favourite yesteryear of style and design, and memorabilia, other people have themed rooms.but for those of us that are restricted with space I would like to introduce the “Retrorama” and “Nostalgiorama”.Firstly Retrorama is where two to five items are put together in a small space perhaps on a table top or mantlepiece or a corner of a room with a theme of your favourite era or subject.Nostalgiorama is the same thing but the items have a personal connection. I have a picture header on my Twitter and Facebook which shows a picture of a bakelite telephone, brass spitfire desk ornament and a brass perpetual calender which is on my TV table this is a retrorama of the Art Deco period.
With Antiques,Collectables, It is all about the look, when you journey to visit the past, there are good reproductions you could buy and there are not so good modern copies that just don’t hit the mark.In the end I believe It’s the item and its history, thats what it’s all about isn’t it?
